River Esk, Whitby
A view from the top of the Khyber Pass hill looking south up the River Esk at Whitby on 11th August 2010. To the left is the jetty which houses the lifeboat station. The centre piece of this image is the J Mitchell Moncrieff I designed bridge connecting the East and West Banks of the River Esk and was built in 1908. The bridge spans 75ft and each section can be operated independently swinging horizontally. The bridge originally carried the A171 road. To avoid congestion in the town centre, the road was diverted to a high level bridge over the Esk Valley built in 1980.
